We facilitate an Independent Shed Project aimed at older or retired men who are socially isolated or lacking purpose after retirement, and want to do something different. Some of our current attendees are also living with dementia and some experience periods of depression. Our ‘shedders’ come together in our carpentry workshop to produce various woodwork items at their own pace, sharing learning in a friendly and inclusive environment. Tangible items are made such as bird boxes, planters and other household and garden items, with participants feeling a real sense of pride in their accomplishments.
We provide broader activities such as arts and crafts, cooking sessions, jigsaw puzzles and board games, whilst encouraging reminiscence and general debate. Our main aim is to bring people together to support each other through shared interest and companionship. The banter and camaraderie between the Shedders are a pleasure to observe, and an informal support group both within the project and outside, has emerged.
